Last week was the London College of Fashion MA Show. Of course I was there to present my magazine project, but there was also 5 other courses showing, including the Fashion course.Posted by Administrator
It was a good show, but personally I didn't love it. Some of the students were top notch, but most of it didn't really excite me. Still, let's focus on the positives. Starting with this handsome chap.

Valentino was arguably the most anticipated show of the week – after 45 years in the industry, the Italian designer is finally stepping down. There wasn’t a dry eye in the house as he sent his finale down the runway – a seemingly never-ending parade of impeccable supermodels in matching dazzling red chiffon. The collection was something of a best-of – nothing new here, but a round up and retrospective of all of Valentino’s classic looks from over the past half a century.

There were elements of the 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s, there were prints, florals, and chiffon, there were tailored skirt suits, one-shouldered evening gowns and pretty day dresses – this diverse, yet effortless glamour is what has made Valentino so beloved amongst his fans. Two of his biggest fans were referenced here – Princess Diana and Jackie Kennedy both adored the Italian stallion, and there were definite hints of both women evident here. Anyway – the pictures will tell you the rest. Adios V-man, we’ll miss you!

When a collection kicks off with a model perched on a rock, surrounded by frothy bubbles, you know that a) you’re in for a good time, and b) the collection is going to be somehow connected to the idea of the sea. It was familiar ground for JPG – sailor girls are something of a favourite of his, and mermaids were surely the next logical step for a designer with a love for all things pantomime. In fact, a large portion of JPG’s collection resembled costumes for the inevitable ‘under the sea’ segment of any good British panto – sequined trousers, floaty chiffon trains, and dresses seemingly made of fish scales. There was sharp tailoring too, which was less obviously mermaid-wear, but maybe it was something they found on a rock and took a fancy to.

Elie Saab’s spangly spectacular consisted of more than 50 crystal encrusted dresses. Be still my beating heart! To be honest, the collection itself wasn’t mind-blowing – the frilly, feathery outfits and sequined boob-tube tops called to mind, as Style.com quite rightly pointed out, Strictly Come Dancing/Dancing On Ice/Dancing With The Stars/any other dancing show consisting of Z-list celebrities wearing too much fake tan, too many sequins and too little anything else. Still – I’m a sucker for anything sparkly, so the collection was suitably satisfying.
