It's Vintage

I received an email today from a lovely reader, asking for some advice about selling vintage designer gear. She was worried about selling on eBay, which is a totally reasonable fear. There's been a lot of talk on internet shopping communities lately about the death of eBay. Stuff sells for too much, there's no good stuff, big blogs are giving away the names of good sellers... For me, eBay was always good because no-one ever seemed to be buying what I was buying. Bidding wars for vintage never seemed to top about £20. These days even the last thing I was watching - a C&A Clockhouse acrylic dress from about 8 years ago, which probably cost £9.99 originally - sold for more than £45. What??

I've been doing most of my vintage shopping on Etsy lately, which is kind of like all the fun of eBay without the thrill/risk of the bidding process. Its vintage section is a lot smaller than its DIY/craft section (which is, admittedly, amazing), and for selling designer it's probably not the answer - but as a general vintage online store, it's definitely preferable to eBay for me. There's still gems to be found on the 'Bay, I'm sure, but its (sniff) not like it used to be.

I'll get back to the issue of selling designer vintage later, but in short, no, eBay is not the answer, for me at least.

Amazin Amazon

I always typo Amazon as Amazin in my address bar. This is probably not an accident, more a subconscious truth, fighting its way out through my fingers.

Anyway. Did you know Amazon (no hyperlink here. Amazon should be in your bookmarks toolbar, and if it isn't, put it there now) sold Dr Martens? No, me neither. At their press day today I learnt that they sell all sorts of things I had no idea about. From Nurofen to the best ever, ever makeup remover by Dermalogica. Who knew? Amazon is literally, amazin'.

Alas, my DM wearing days are behind me. With growing up out of your goth/kinderwhore stage comes, ironically, growing into your cankles. Still, DMs rule, dude.

Sexy! No No No

One of the many, many, many things that makes me irate is people listing things incorrectly on ebay. I get that it's deliberate, don't get me wrong, but it drives me bananas. The worst offender is the pages and pages of 'SEXY! Women's Chinese silk Cheong-Sam' dresses that dominate the first 3-4 pages of my search for 'dress' in the vintage section.

Who buys these things?
